The Yoga of Sufi Poetry with Katy Hawkins

Wake Up Yoga Fairmount
Saturday, September 30th * 1 – 3pm
Tuition: $35; $25 if by 9/14

We will experience the wild, sensual Sufi mystics Rumi and Hafiz through yoga. Our creative approach to asana will explore yoga poses by actually embodying famous images from these poets (the hundred ways of kissing the earth, the heart center as fire, changing rooms in our mind, buttering the sky, the field beyond good and evil, the chickpea cooking, etc.) Most central to our exploration will be the meditative practice of circling, practiced by Rumi and the whirling dervishes. Our 2 hours together will include: a walking meditation practice designed to reflect the movement of the whirling dervishes, by modern dance legend Joseph Laban; a carefully designed sequence of asana constructed as a big circle (or mala), exploring various ways of moving the body in circles; Katy will read and briefly treat poems that introduce a famous image, while participants are seamlessly guided through the yoga poses that embody these poetic themes; pranayama (breath practices) that move energy in circles; a final relaxation exploring Nada Yoga (the yoga of sound) through the buttery voice of Fatimeh Keshavarz reading the poems in the original Persian.
