Katy Hawkins

Katy Hawkins took her first yoga class when pregnant with her first child. She continued to study Vinyasa in New York City until relocating to Philadelphia and began teacher training at Wake Up. While completing a Ph.D in Comparative Literature at NYU, Katy’s academic work began to take on a yogic flavor. Her dissertation came to focus on how Eastern frameworks appear in several contemporary American studies of illness. (Her published work can be found in such journals as Criticism and Women and Performance.) As she became more and more absorbed in the study of Mahayana Buddhism, her training moved her from Zen practice (Fire Lotus Temple, NYC) to Shamatha-Vipassana (Chogyam Trungpa lineage), but landed her back in the Quaker heritage in which she was raised (Chestnut Hill Meeting).
Her teaching style is a Vinyasa flow colored by her interest in poetry and mindfulness practices, and also by her love of modern dance.

The real keys to her soul and sanity are her sweetie Dan and a daily meditation practice that has guided her through the wild and rugged wilderness of motherhood.
